Check in vs. Weigh in
When was the last time you checked in with your body? Like really checked in? Or do you go through the motions, packing the same thing for lunch every day, meal prepping the same thing every week because it's “healthy”, or scanning the menu for the lowest calorie meal. Our obsession with diet culture has made it easy for us to abide by these arbitrary food rules that have no basis in what we want, but what we think we should be doing. The worst part is that rarely we are aware of it, it's just become so ingrained in our minds. When we're in this habit for so long, it can actually be challenging to know what we want or how we feel.
But are these rules doing you any favors? Or are they just creating more space between what your body is telling you and your decision making, and creating unnecessary food noise that seems to never be resolved. The thing is, when you begin to soften your mind and actually check in on your body, you may realize that everything you’ve been eating or doing may actually not even be what you want. How do you begin to know what you want? Its a practice, and this journey won’t be linear. But once you try to check in with yourself, you may just realize how silly all of these “rules” have been all along.
The best part about being in tune with your body is the mini epiphanies you will begin to have. The moment when you realize protein doesn’t have to dominate your every meal, or when you can confidently detect that pasta is the dish you've been craving all week. It seems so obvious, but don’t worry, it's not. Especially when our food culture has told us to do everything but listen to our bodies.
